alternARTives grew out of a shared observation by La Fabrique Francophone (Cahors, France) and La Vénerie (Watermael-Boitsfort, Belgium): cultural rights are legally recognised in both France and Belgium, yet putting them into practice within organisations remains a largely open task. Between the statement of these fundamental values and their potential to shift how organisations work, something is missing — a shared literacy, tools, and spaces for analysis and debate.
The project brought together the teams of both organisations — employees, volunteers, board members, and members of the local working groups — around three action-research cycles (which we call “relational research”) carried out between December 2025 and June 2026. Each explored one dimension of the task: governance and self-evaluation, the cultural-rights framework, and participation and access.
The question the project raises is also a European one. To examine the work of cultural rights across borders is to test how far Europe can lay claim to strong values — rooted in human rights and put to the test of differing contexts.
